WPC: Free Spirit

wild carrot blossom and eristalis hoverflies

I’ve always been attracted by flying creatures and their easy liberation from the ties of gravity but even so there are still the shackles of mortality. These two, very polished, bee-mimicing Syrphidae began life  in fetid pools as rat-tailed maggots before launching themselves into the ether as hoverflies. Same species (eristalis), same time, same place but which one of these is the free spirit?

Just a wry thought for today and my contribution to the WordPress weekly photo challenge
