Straw poll

Exif_JPEG_PICTUREThough the number of respondents was small, the wind of group opinion suggests that:-

  • ‘recent posts’ are more readily read than ‘top’ or ‘related posts’
  • a visible search button is the most useful
  • an ‘about’ page is de rigeur (though I use Gravatar widget as substitute)

I’m not a betting woman but would have gambled on most of us using the WordPress reader to skim posts rather than  go to the effort of visiting our blogs site. It seems that in fact the opposite is true which also means sidebar and footer widgets etc could be noticed.

Thank you to all who took part.

The results may have a biased skew from a select group that have found the post, read, and taken the time to vote. If you’ve not already done so you can always add your voice to Poll: Attention seeking widgets

  1. Interesting! I’ve been thinking a lot recently about what makes a good blog theme to me, and have realised that one thing is it being easy to go to previous and next posts, and know which is which. There’s no standard for whether left is forward or back in time, and if the links are only immediately after the post then it can take an irritating amount of scrolling to work your way back past loads of comments to get there. Strangely enough the links being right at the top feels better, as it is easy to get there, whatever photo reloading etc is going on.
