I’m completing this 7 day challenge by opening up the view from the week’s detailed look at nature to the wider context – and co-incidentally joining the weekly photo challenge theme of Landscape
This is a Londoner’s landscape. A bridge over the river Lea to Walthamstow Marshes; the fen in the city. In the 1970s the site was proposed for gravel extraction until local activists campaigned to allocate the marshes as an area of special interest. It was the re-discovered presence of rare Adders Tongue Ferns among tall sedge on South Marsh which had an added impact on saving the area from ultimate destruction.
Nature teems with life in these ancient water meadows – one only has to read the survey by the Save the Marshes Campaign to appreciate the biodiversity that lives here within just a few miles of central London.Nature Challenge Days 1-6 Gallery:-
